About Croatia
October 29, 2011

Lonjsko Polje Nature Park, Europe’s largest and most fragile wetland ecosystem, and the tiny, Grimm’s fairytale villages stretched along the Sava River are together, a unique “living example” of central Europe as it was 200 years ago. Farmers still rely on medieval farming systems to maintain a harmonious balance with nature and to support rare, indigenous breeds of farm animals that have adapted to the continual flooding. See pigs that swim and dive for river clams, the Posavina horse (once thought extinct), Slavonian cattle . . . but especially see the storks. Every spring, flocks of White Stork return from Africa to lay their eggs in nests perched on the roofs of Čigoć’s Hansel and Gretal oak houses. In some villages, there are more storks than people !
