From just outside Varaždin where the river heads east to join the Danube along the border between Croatia and Hungary in an area famous for its bio-diversity. A wide, sweeping river suitable for the whole family for easy floating with numerous sandy beaches for frequent stops (see description) and a BBQ with optional overnight camping to give your activity holiday a true wilderness feel.
Varaždin (see description), surrounded by the gentle foothills of the Alps where ancient forts and castles still stand guard, is the ideal base for a family activity holiday. Trek up to the highest points in the county for spectacular views over the borders to Slovenia and Hungary and, on a clear day, all the way to the Alps (see description). Day routes depend on client choice of distance and challenge. Additional options include an introduction to simple rock scrambling or climbing at Kalnik , a thirteenth century ruined castle with stunning panoramic views.
Explore the country roads around Varazdin, either up through the vineyards, through the forests or on the flat – your choice. Price includes guide and bike hire.
Training and all-day treks on disciplined, responsive, good quality horses up through meadows and forests into the Zelina mountains with opportunities to stop for wine tasting. Stables are managed and treks led by a member of the Croatian National Riding Team. Novice and experienced riders equally welcomed.
OK, so it’s not Croatia but an excursion over the border to Bihac in Bosnia and Herzegovina for yet another change of scenery – cafés, baklava, minarets, mosques and the spectacular Una river. Starting just below one of the region’s biggest waterfalls this crystal clear river, surrounded by mountains provides the magnificent setting for an exhilarating 3 hour ride with stops for swimming and traditional Bosnian lunch.
